Learn Transcendental Meditation

It’s part of our initiative to help more people in the lower South Island–by reducing the impact of stress, building resilience, and supporting calmer, more connected whānau and communities.

What is the TM technique?

Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural technique practised for 20 minutes, twice a day, sitting comfortably with eyes closed. It’s not a religion or lifestyle change—just a way for your mind to settle into deep rest while staying fully awake.Discover what TM is and hear from our community.

See the Measurable Benefits

Clearer thinking and creativity

Through improved brain function, many experience better focus, mental clarity, and a broader perspective, helping them work more effectively towards their goals.

Less stress and anxiety

TM builds resilience so challenging situations feel more manageable. In one study, the TM technique reduced cortisol levels by around 30%—a meaningful reduction in stress levels, which many people feel in daily life.

Better sleep and overall health

Regular practice supports deep rest that activates the body’s natural recovery processes, improving heart health, immunity, sleep quality, and stress-related conditions.

Improved relationships

As stress eases and emotional balance grows, interactions with family, friends, and colleagues often become calmer and more positive.Research on the TM technique reports better emotional regulation, smoother conflict management, and more satisfying family and work relationships—changes many people notice at home and in their wider community.

A legacy of wisdom

Meditation might feel very talked about today, but it’s an age‑old practice.
Revived from ancient Vedic tradition, TM was first introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s.
Times have changed, with new technologies and different ways of engaging with the world, and yet TM’s simple, timeless method works as well today as it always has.
